Using Social Networking on your Website: A Primer

April 5, 2009

We are always doing research for our clients on new methods of distribution, disseminating your message, and building your community of clients.

Here are five ways we encourage you to use social networking tools on your existing site. We have many more free articles on Monica's business blog: A Successful Woman (search the blog for the tag 'networking').

Twitter
A Twitter account is free and is an easy way to increase your ability to make 'micro-updates' to your site. We post to our Twitter accounts and one of them updates our own homepage. All Twitter postings are search engine fodder so when you consistently post on your top ten keywords, you slowly raise your ability to rise to the top within your chosen field. Some people build their Twitter followers by doing Twitter-specific events or promotions.

Facebook for Business
We recommend setting up a Facebook for Business page: these have recently been updated and now a Facebook page can be for a business profile. Use these and Facebook Groups to build a sense of community and have Facebook-only giveaways or promotions.

LinkedIn
For professional services you'll want to post recommendations to your Linkedin.com profile. Also consider posting informational items like your Amazon reading list, your SlideShare powerpoint presentations, or your Blog postings to your LinkedIn profile.

Blogging
An old stand-by, we highly recommend that you install Wordpress onto your host (many hosts offer one-click installation) and use the blog to expand your opinions, feedback, articles, or informational resources on your particular subject area. It's possible to post the first few postings or the most recent titles of your posts to your regular website homepage: consider this as a way to extend the sense of looking 'behind-the-scenes' and providing more information about your company.

Claim your Identity
It's important to claim your own identity (for your business name, your personal 'handle' or your gmail or group accounts) so that it's easy to find you online. Do a Google Search on your business name, personal name, or main keywords to determine your current status. Does someone else have a similar name to you? Once you get a sense of how you are ranking within search engine listings, you can use the above tools to 'pad out' your results with more relevant links.

Marketing and Search Engine Optimization for your Website: Does it Work?

February 2, 2009

Does your website work for you? Should it? We think so. Of course, we're in business to make your website work for you, so don't believe us, look at the numbers.

Case #1: A Successful Woman
Here's a download PDF of Analytics (opens in a new window) for one of our sites. This is twelve months of steady growth data for one of our personal websites that we've created.

When we first started planning for for this site www.asuccessfulwoman.com, we wanted to build organic traffic through blog links, articles, and referring sites. We wanted visitors to grab the information they need and use the site as a resource. We also wanted to increase website traffic.

There are different levels of access to this site, including a free e-newsletter signup, a free blog with over 280 articles, paid membership options, online training, a social networking group, product and service reviews, and advertising opportunities.

For 2008, we wanted to get the website to the very top of Google and Yahoo! search engine listings for 'a successful woman' and we've achieved that.

For 2009 the plan is to increase our e-newsletter signup and the number of active participants in the Facebook group.

Case #2: 10K Webdesign
Here's a download PDF of Analytics (opens in a new window) for our own site. This is twelve months of stable data.

For our site, our primary goals are to answer your questions before you connect with us directly to start your website. Notice that the average length of time on the site for our visitors is 18 minutes and 39 seconds. Take your hourly rate and divide it by 4: that's the amount we believe the website is saving us by having our existing website resources 'do the work' of informing and explaining our process to you.

Consider that, as a customer, one can do this research in the comfort of a home or business, on any time schedule (24/7) and without having to pick up the phone and call or interact with anyone.

Once our customers do their research and they're ready to get started, they typically contact us through our contact form with a clear list of what they need, which we can then implement in a straightforward manner.

Would you like to implement these kinds of solutions on your own site?

You can sign up for your own free analytics at: http://www.google.com/analytics. Get and install the snippet of code that goes on the bottom of your pages to track who visits your website.

10K Webdesign utilizes a variety of tools to achieve specific results. This year we'll be focusing on 'Extending your Brand' through social networking tools. If you would like the same treatment for your own company website, we invite you to participate as a beta-tester. Let us know what you'd like to achieve with your own organizational or business website.

On June 12, 2008, Monica Flores was a featured presenter at the women's business center on Honolulu. The topic of her talk to 25 participants was: Web Site Design: How It Looks vs. How It Works

She explored items such as: How important are pictures? How many buttons are too many? How many are too few? How often should you refresh your copy? How do you keep your content engaging and 'sticky?' and how your Content Management System (CMS) allows you to control your page content through items like a calendar of events, e-mail subscriber list, or product inventory.

Kilohana Goes Green for Earth Day 2008

PRESS RELEASE
April 17, 2008

Kilohana Elementary School, on Molokai's east end, plays leadership role in safeguarding our island

Celebrating Earth Week with biodegradable, non-GMO-based corn utensils for school meals

(Kaunakakai, Molokai) Earth Day, held every year on April 22, provides a time for communities, individuals, and institutions to highlight issues surrounding environmental sustainability. On Molokai, one major issue that has a profound impact upon the environment is non-degradable plastics. Kilohana Elementary School is taking a step towards building a sustainable future by using compostable utensils made out of corn for school meals during Earth Week.

Molokai residents Genesis Lodise, Monica Flores, Pat Harris, Liz Price, and Yonie Harris originally initiated the idea to use corn-based utensils, and they contacted Kilohana Elementary school principal Leighton Kawai to encourage a pilot program to use these utensils.

'Here on Molokai we would like to do our part to protect the environment,' said Lodise, whose son attends the school. 'Plastic ends up in land fills where it will remain for possibly thousands of years. Plastic can also leach chemicals into the ground water. We'd like to help provide a positive example of environmental stewardship for the community during the week surrounding Earth Day 2008.'

'Every day for both breakfast and lunch, the students use a fork or spoon, for a single serving.' said Flores. 'Kilohana is doing a great job in raising awareness that there are other options instead of plastic and petrochemicals.'

The corn-based forks, and spoons are heat resistant and biodegradable, and are made with non-GMO corn. As a way to highlight awareness, flyers with information about the cutlery and their importance will be provided to teachers and staff as a way to start a conversation about Earth Day.

For more information on Kilohana Elementary School, contact Principal Leighton Kawai at 808-558-2200.

For those looking to switch to biodegradable utensils, containers, and cups, contact Honolulu-based Styrophobia at www.styrophobia.com, or visit Worldcentric at www.worldcentric.org.

The Influencer book coming out October 1

'Influencer: The Power to Change Anything' arrives in bookstores on October 1, 2007. From the authors of the New York Times bestseller 'Crucial Conversations,' the authors Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler have distilled over fifty years of social science research to identify case studies and lessons from world class 'change geniuses.'

Says author Grenny, 'Our new book describes vital work done by the most influential social scientists of the past 50 years who have shown repeatedly that most any behavior can be changed if you just know how to do it... The stories are astounding and the principles are life changing. We've felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to do justice to these ideas.' The authors also give profound insights on the actual ways we may answer the question 'How does one person change the world?'

10K Signs on to Business For a Fair Minimum Wage

10K Group LLC is proud to announce their signature has been added to the list of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage supporters, which includes the CEOs of the US Women's Chamber of Commerce, Costco, and Small Business Majority.

For a record-breaking 10 years, the federal minimum wage has not been raised; however, a fast-growing campaign led by small and large
business owners are saying a higher minimum wage is in fact good for business.

Kirsten Poole, co-owner of Kirsten's Cafe and Dish Caterers in Silver Spring, MD, says, 'Trying to save money by shortchanging my employees would be like skimping on ingredients. I'd lose more than I saved because of declining quality, service, reputation and customer base. You can't build a healthy business or a healthy economy on a miserly minimum wage.'

While the Congress debates the issue, states that have led the way by raising their minimum wages above the current $5.15 minimum wage have had better employment and small business trends than states that have not.

Margot Dorfman, CEO of the U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce, said, 'We all lose when American workers are underpaid. Whether as business owners or employees, women have a significant stake in providing for their families and their communities.' The statement supporting higher minimum wage and a list of sample signatories appear below. We invite your participation at http://www.businessforafairminimumwage.org
