On Molokai, one major issue that has a profound impact upon the environment is non-degradable plastics. Kilohana Elementary School is taking a step towards building a sustainable future by using compostable utensils made out of corn for school meals during Earth Week. Molokai residents Genesis Lodise, Monica Flores, Pat Harris, Liz Price, and Yonie Harris originally initiated the idea to use corn-based utensils, and they contacted Kilohana Elementary school principal Leighton Kawai to encourage a pilot program to use these utensils. 'Here on Molokai we would like to do our part to protect the environment,' said Lodise, whose son attends the school. 'Plastic ends up in land fills where it will remain for possibly thousands of years. Plastic can also leach chemicals into the ground water. We'd like to help provide a positive example of environmental stewardship for the community during the week surrounding Earth Day 2008.' 'Every day for both breakfast and lunch, the students use a fork or spoon, for a single serving.' said Flores. 'Kilohana is doing a great job in raising awareness that there are other options instead of plastic and petrochemicals.' The corn-based forks, and spoons are heat resistant and biodegradable, and are made with non-GMO corn. As a way to highlight awareness, flyers with information about the cutlery and their importance will be provided to teachers and staff as a way to start a conversation about Earth Day. For more information on Kilohana Elementary School, contact Principal Leighton Kawai at 808-558-2200. For those looking to switch to biodegradable utensils, containers, and cups, contact Honolulu-based Styrophobia at www.styrophobia.com, or visit Worldcentric at www.worldcentric.org. For a record-breaking 10 years, the federal minimum wage has not been raised; however, a fast-growing campaign led by small and large business owners are saying a higher minimum wage is in fact good for business. Kirsten Poole, co-owner of Kirsten's Cafe and Dish Caterers in Silver Spring, MD, says, 'Trying to save money by shortchanging my employees would be like skimping on ingredients. I'd lose more than I saved because of declining quality, service, reputation and customer base. You can't build a healthy business or a healthy economy on a miserly minimum wage.' While the Congress debates the issue, states that have led the way by raising their minimum wages above the current $5.15 minimum wage have had better employment and small business trends than states that have not. Margot Dorfman, CEO of the U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce, said, 'We all lose when American workers are underpaid. Whether as business owners or employees, women have a significant stake in providing for their families and their communities.' The statement supporting higher minimum wage and a list of sample signatories appear below.
